Learn more about THCa, cannabinoids, laboratory testing, and hemp regulations.

Understanding THCa

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the naturally occurring precursor to Delta-9 THC found in raw hemp. Freshly harvested hemp primarily contains THCa rather than Delta-9 THC.

THCa and Delta-9 THC are closely related cannabinoids with different chemical structures. When THCa is exposed to sufficient heat, it naturally converts into Delta-9 THC through a process called decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation is the natural process in which heat removes a carboxyl group from THCa, converting it into Delta-9 THC. This process occurs whenever hemp is heated.

Hemp plants naturally produce cannabinoids in their acidic forms. THCa is one of the primary cannabinoids produced during cultivation before any heat is applied.

Some states regulate hemp based only on Delta-9 THC, while others regulate Total THC. Total THC accounts for both the naturally occurring Delta-9 THC and the amount of THCa that could convert into Delta-9 THC through decarboxylation. Laboratories commonly calculate Total THC using the following formula:

Total THC = (THCa × 0.87) + Delta-9 THC

The 0.87 conversion factor accounts for the molecular weight difference between THCa and Delta-9 THC after decarboxylation. Because hemp laws vary by state, products that comply in one jurisdiction may not be permitted in another.

Independent laboratories report individual cannabinoid concentrations to provide transparency and help demonstrate compliance with applicable hemp regulations.

While federal law establishes a framework for hemp, individual states may adopt additional requirements. As a result, product availability and shipping eligibility may vary depending on your location.

Laboratory testing helps verify cannabinoid content, confirms compliance with applicable regulations, and provides customers with transparent product information.

A COA typically includes cannabinoid content, laboratory testing results, batch identification, testing dates, and additional information that helps verify the quality and compliance of a product.

At Viridescent Farms, we believe informed customers make confident decisions. We're committed to providing clear, transparent, and accurate information about hemp so you can better understand the products you purchase.

Hemp Education

Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa cultivated for a wide range of commercial applications. Hemp products sold by Viridescent Farms are produced in accordance with applicable federal hemp regulations.

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in hemp. Different cannabinoids contribute to the unique characteristics of each hemp cultivar and product.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds naturally found in hemp and many other plants. They are responsible for the distinctive aroma and flavor profiles of different cultivars.

A cultivar is a cultivated variety of hemp selected for its unique genetics, aroma, flavor, appearance, and other distinguishing characteristics.

These terms are commonly used to describe the heritage or classification of a cultivar. Today, many modern cultivars are hybrids developed from multiple genetic lineages.

A Certificate of Analysis, or COA, is a laboratory report that provides information about cannabinoid content and other testing results for a product.

Hemp is an agricultural crop. Natural variations in growing conditions can result in slight differences in aroma, appearance, and color while maintaining high quality standards.

Terpene profiles help describe the unique aroma and flavor characteristics of each cultivar, making them an important part of comparing different hemp products.

Consistent genetics help produce reliable aroma, flavor, appearance, and overall product quality. We carefully select cultivars that meet our standards for craftsmanship and consistency.

Each product page includes detailed information such as lineage, terpene profile, aroma, flavor, appearance, and key product characteristics to help you make an informed purchasing decision.
